Al started his career when he was hired as a press photographer for The Times, straight out of high school. Looking back, he has always credited that job as being the best on the job training he could imagine. Under the guidance of Richard Rudzinski, (Indiana Press Photographer of the Year) Al developed an expertise in Photojournalism, Sports Photography, Architectural Photography, as well as Fashion, Portrait, and Product Photography.
After ten years with the paper, Al decided to strike out on his own and spent the next three years traveling the country, freelancing for several magazine and book publishers, including: Profile Publications, Windsor Publications, Time Magazine, Sports Illustrated, and Random House Books.
